Brave Leader in America – My impression of Benedict Arnold Short Essay

In The Notorious Benedict Arnold, Arnold is a very brave, honest and determined leader. He always did what was right and wanted to be the best that he could be. He had great leadership skills and was a big help to the colonists throughout many wars. On the March to Quebec, he was a remarkable general. Many of the soldiers agreed with this they say that he was a brave and a beloved leader. After the March to Quebec Arnold was praised for his good efforts. One quote to represent this is, “ Our commander, Arnold, was a remarkable character,” said John Henry a sixteen-year-old member of the mission. “ He was brave, even to temerity, and was beloved by the soldiery.” (Sheinkin 63). Arnold is a strong leader and uses his leadership skills while on the way to Quebec. He always knew what to do in any situation. He never quit and never let down his soldiers, he would be encouraging his men with inspirational words during the transportation of the boats. Arnold was very determined. At a very young age, Arnold ran away without permission to fight in the French and Indian war. One quote that shows how committed to the war was “ The only trouble came during the French and Indian War, when Arnold, then eighteen, ran off, without permission to join the fighting.” (Sheinkin 12 ). Benedict had lost his sister when he was a child, lost his education because of his father. His Dad had gone to jail, so he didn’t have much parental vision. He went to the war without approval from his mom. Arnold works very hard in his career and becomes more determined by many things happening through his tragic life. He always strives to renew his family name after his dad had ruined it. Arnold works his way through life always trying to get a better job. One quote to show this is, “ Benedict Arnold had risen quickly since the end of his apprenticeship – from a teenager dusting bottles and mixing powders, to a wealthy merchant, owner of a showy home, and leader of the local Patriots. “ (Sheinkin 22). Benedict is determined and wants to renew his family reputation. He works hard and is finally doing something that can help his name. Arnold’s quick rise in status could make his family name immortal. Arnold always did what was right. He never wanted to break any rules and he wanted other people to do the right thing as well. This theory can be proven with a quote, “Arnold ran up and down the halls, quoting military law about respecting the property of prisoners. When he saw a man running off with a sewing table, he yanked it away and handed it back to the woman who owned it” (Sheinkin 37). While Arnold has joined forces with Ethan Allan, Arnold was infuriated with the Green Mountain Boys for destroying property and stealing after the violation of Fort Ticonderoga. All in all, Arnold is a very brave, honest and determined leader.

This is my Mathidle essay “by Guy de Maupassant

Mathilde reveals her true character through a decision to try and fit in no matter what the cost. Mathilde is very unappreciative of her life, however, her husband is the opposite and he is very grateful for what he has. Mathilde is never satisfied with her lifestyle so she always dreams of having a nice home and clothing. Mathilde’s rich friend lends her a very expensive necklace. She borrowed a necklace that was more than she could afford and then had to deal with the consequences for the next 10 years of her life. In “The Necklace” by Guy De Maupassant, Mathidile’s choice to borrow the necklace transformed her life by having to work off the money for the jewelry. After she worked off the money, she was worn down and was very miserable and tired. Also, she realized what her life could have been more successful if she had not been so greedy. Mathilde’s determination to fit in with the rest of the rich people at the party helps the reader to realize how she would give to be wealthy and to look nice.

At the very beginning of the story, Mathilde’s choice of going to the ball impacts her behavior for the rest of her life. Mathilde had to make a lot of decisions throughout “The Necklace”. One of those decisions was when her husband came home with an invitation to go to a very fancy ball. Her husband was very happy for her but she was too busy being embarrassed by what others would think of her. This is because everyone else that would be there would be wearing rich gowns and fancy accessories. Mathilde had to decide if she would be able to overcome her nerves or if she should just stay home. For example, the text states, “Wear flowers,” he said. “They’re very smart at this time of the year. For ten francs you could get two or three gorgeous roses. She was not convinced” (de Maupassant 30). This shows that Mathilde had many options that she could have worn but because Mathilde is a greedy person she wants to fit in with everyone else. Mathilde is not satisfied with her husband’s advice of buying a fresh flower, she wants a “diamond” necklace. Mathilde is ungrateful, unpleased and very selfish. Mathilde wants more than they can afford. This decision has a big impact on the story because if she had not been greedy and selfish she would not have had to borrow the jewelry which then caused her to lose an “ extremely expensive necklace.” All in all, Mathilde’s actions and decisions throughout the story have had a big impact on the outcome of “ The Necklace”.

Mathilde had a hard next 10 years. Another thing that changed when Mathilde borrowed and lost the necklace was her appearance. At the beginning of the story, it explains how beautiful Mathilde was and how everyone admired her. Over the years of working hard every day, Mathilde had more time to think about her actions and less time to think about herself and what she looked like. Mathilde had changed and now was always looking tired and miserable. In the text, it explains “Her hair was badly done, her skirts were awry, her hands were red.” (De Maupassant 96) This indicates that if Mathilde had never lost the necklace then she would have probably kept up on looking delightful and charming. Since she lost the necklace she had to work to pay the debt for the next ten years, she did not have much time to think about herself. Her appearance has an impact on the story when Mathilde sees Madame Fortiester on the street one day. Madame Forester could barely recognize Mathilde because her looks had changed so much.

One last way that Mathilde changed from losing the necklace was her personality. At the beginning of the story, she was very ungrateful and believed she should have had a better husband, house and life. She was not happy with many aspects of life. For example, she suffered from the brokenness of her home, the walls, worn chairs, and the ugly curtains. The way her personality and attitude changed was near the end of the story is shown in this quote, “She had become like all the other strong, hard, coarse women of poor households.” (De Maupassant 96) This reveals that Mathilde started her life as inconsiderate, self-centered and selfish person that did not appreciate what she had gotten throughout her life. After Mathilde loses the necklace, she works to pay off the debt and she is completely changed. At the end of the story, she knew she had made the mistake of losing Madame Forestier’s necklace and was going to have to deal with the consequences. She did not complain about her work because she knew by now that it would get her nowhere in life. Mathilde turned into content, satisfied woman. Her personality impacts the story’s outcome because if Mathilde never realized how you must work hard in life, she never would have been satisfied. Once she realized that if you work hard, you can succeed in life, she started to persevere to pay off the necklace.

In conclusion, Mathilde’s determination to fit in with the rest of the rich people at the ball helps the reader to realize how much she would give to be wealthy and to look nice. At the beginning of the story, Mathilde was very ungrateful for what she had. She was married into a poor family and had always cried about her apartment and the life that she had. She was not wealthy, but she wanted to have rich clothes, a nice house, and especially furniture. After Mathilde works of the dept, she realizes that she must continue to work hard if she wants to be happy with her life. Mathilde’s husband suggests that she should just write to her friend when she loses the necklace, but she doesn’t agree. If Mathilde told the truth to Madame Forestier, she would have never had to ruin her life by paying for the necklace. Also, there was situational irony at the end of the story. Mathilde had originally been given to borrow a cheap necklace, not noticing that the diamonds were fake. To conclude, when Mathilde borrows the necklace from Madame Loisel, this has a big impact on the outcome of the short story ¨The Necklace” by Guy de Maupassant.

This is my Stronger Together essay from our One Book One School Reading Over the Summer!

Alex always wanted to be a hero. Nothing ever happened to him until his eleventh birthday. Eleven by Tom Rogers is a story about the events of a boy turning eleven on September 11th. In Eleven, the people who lived in Manhattan came together in several ways to help their community during the terrorist attacks of 9-11-2001.  There are many themes, one of which and the most meaningful to me personally is stronger together.

The theme stronger together is shown in many ways. In the story, there is a moment, where the man in a white shirt and a cop helped the injured people to get to safety. One quote that I think represents stronger together is “ Then they lifted him down the street, three people moving as one ” ( Rogers 88). Even with all the chaos, the cop and the man and the white shirt had become a team, carrying one person after another until they had helped 5 injured people. These two strangers had linked arms together without thinking of themselves and selflessly became one to help a community in need. If the cop and the man had not become a team, I do not think that they would have had as much of an impact helping so many people. This example of stronger together reminds me of when my friends all helped me carry my binders around. It was my first year of middle school and I broke my ankle, I felt helpless. My friends did not worry if they were late to class, they helped me get around. I realized we were stronger together than just me alone.

Another way the theme stronger together is represented is when the grocer helps the man in the white shirt to stay hydrated. When he goes to a small shop downtown and asks the employee for a phone to make a call to his father, Mac. The man in the white shirt realizes there is no cellular service during the attack. As the man in the white shirt goes to leave the grocer offers him a bottle of water. One quote that shows the theme is “ The man in the white shirt fished his pockets for change but came up empty. The grocer waved him off and shoved the bottle of water into his hand. ” ( Rogers 115). This shows how the people of Manhattan bonded together as one community and helped each other during the terrorist attack of 9-11. I can relate this theme to my life, I was in fifth grade and me and two other friends were at the hockey rink. We all wanted a slushie, however, when we went up to buy them we were one dollar and twenty cents short. I was embarrassed and scared we were going to get in trouble. The lady behind us gave the cashier the dollar and twenty cents we needed. I will always remember this moment when a stranger helped us.

Another example of Stronger together is when Mr. Patel, the pizza man noticed that Alex did not have enough money so he helps Alex and his younger sister Nunu, by giving them two free slices of pizza. “ Can we have another? Nunu asked snapping him back to reality. Coming right up, Mr. Patel replied, and put two slices in the oven before Alex could say no. Thank you said Alex. Mr. Patel nodded seriously. “It is the least I can do” (Rogers 120). Mr. Patel realized that they were not with their parents and needed money because Nunu and Alex were hungry. The pizzeria owner realized how scared and worried Alex was about the attacks. He noticed how Alex was hiding his emotions from Nunu. He thought that this was the one kind thing that he could do for Alex and Nunu.

The stronger together theme is very relatable to my own life, On my hockey team, we have 17 players. If it was just me versing the other team I would lose. When we work together we can develop new skills and learn as a team. With my CCD class, we help the elderly by making them dinner and making them Christmas cards. We all work together to help those in need. In conclusion, throughout the book Eleven, even though there were attacks and chaos, everyone bonded and helped one another becoming stronger together.

This is my writing prompt for ” The Monkey’s Paw”.

In the story “The Monkey’s Paw”, the author  W.W Jacobs uses foreshadowing in many ways. The foreshadowing in the story helps to contribute to the story’s overall meaning. Foreshadowing is used to give hints or clues of how the rest of the story will unfold. In “The Monkey’s Paw” the author has used foreshadowing in the short story without giving the rest of the story away. The author uses foreshadowing when the sergeant-major warns the White family, and shows the reader that something evil may happen, many times. In the “Monkey’s Paw, The author uses foreshadowing to hint or give clues about what will come in the future of the story.  “Hold it up in your right hand and wish aloud,” said the sergeant-major, “but I warn you of the consequences.” Line 44. Foreshadowing is shown in this quote because it hints and gives clues that something is bound to happen to the White’s when the wish upon the monkey’s paw. Sergeant-Major is expecting something to go wrong. The foreshadowing in the story helps support the theme In the “Monkey’s Paw”. When W.W Jacobs foreshadows he is usually trying to let the reader know something bad is going to happen. The foreshadowing in the story is used when Mr. White is trying to find the monkey’s paw at the bottom of the stairs to make the last wish. The author shows foreshadowing at the bottom of the stairs showing that something frightening may happen. “At the foot of the stairs the match went out, and he paused to strike another, and at the same moment a knock, so quiet and stealthy as to be scarcely audible, sounded on the front door.” Foreshadowing connects to my quote to show that something dreadful will happen. The author can hint that Mrs. White will open the door but the author keeps the story interesting by letting Mr.White make the last wish at the exact same time the door opens. One last example of foreshadowing is when the author suggests that one of the White’s family members will get seriously injured and or face death. This could be inquiring that the reader should be aware that something horrible may happen. One quote in the “Monkey’s Paw, that represents foreshadowing is, “The first man had his three wishes, yes,” was the reply. “I don’t know what the first two were, but the third was for death. That’s how I got the paw.” Foreshadowing is demonstrated in this quote because it can indicate that something terrible may happen to one of Whites family members if they don’t make the right wish. All in all, foreshadowing is shown in many ways all throughout the short story, the “Monkey’s Paw”.
